Studying Literature Through the Arts in an Urban Classroom

Documentary An Arts Integration Project

Over a six week period 85 ninth grade students at Minneapolis Public School’s Washburn High School worked with English teacher, Jim Schmitt, and theater teaching artist, Anton Jones, to relate to and understand William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.
The team used an approach called ArtsLiteracy. ArtsLit uses practices from the theater arts to engage students in deep interpretations of a text.
